Affinity Groups
We encourage MCNet members to get involved with one or more Affinity Groups. Affinity Groups create space for network participants to coalesce around specific conservation topics as outlined in the group listings below.
BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color)
Creating space for BIPOC members to discuss the future of conservation in the Twin Cities
Data & Technology
Moving the science of conservation forward with innovative products and collaborative project management
Land and Water Protection & Planning
Strategizing acquisition, restoration, and preservation of natural areas in the greater Twin Cities metro
Advancing field operations in the restoration of habitat through climate adaptation strategies and empowerment of natural resource stewards
Social Dimensions & Engagement
Ensuring network benefits reach every level of the natural resources professional community and that network accomplishments positively impact the entire Twin Cities population
Why Participate?
Participating in an Affinity Group is a great way to meet colleagues with similar interests and forge connections into the future. These opportunities happen at our biennial meetings, as well as during activities such as virtual presentations and brown bags. One of the purposes of the network is to achieve the collective conservation advancements we can’t attain as individuals. Affinity Group members are empowered to develop initiatives or projects that are mutually beneficial. An example is the field tours put on by the Stewardship and Restoration group.
How To Get Involved?
You can get involved by attending a biennial meeting or signing up to be on our mailing list and selecting one or more of the Affinity Groups. Your level of involvement is up to you. You can simply join the conversation at a biennial meeting, attend field tours, participate in virtual meetings, or offer to help lead Affinity Groups. If those discussions identify a knowledge or information gap that needs to be filled – start something new. We encourage any and all to step into leadership roles with the groups – at least one lead is needed to call meetings and help keep the group following through on initiatives. How Do Affinity Groups Operate?
The groups are self-directed with the support of at least one Steering Team member. Groups are free to propose ideas that support the overall MCNet’s vision and guiding principles. Ideas move forward when one or more people are ready and willing to help implement the idea. Groups are encouraged to meet virtually or in-person throughout the year, typically every other month. Communication is through email to provide notice of meetings or activities.
